A.J. Brown to the Patriots: the Fantasy Fallout for Brown, Maye, Smith and Goedert
Philadelphia sent A.J. Brown to New England for a 2028 first and a 2027 fifth. Here is what it does to Brown, Drake Maye, DeVonta Smith and Dallas Goedert this season.
The Philadelphia Eagles traded A.J. Brown to the New England Patriots for a 2028 first round pick and a 2027 fifth round pick. It is the single biggest transaction of the fantasy offseason, and it rewrites the outlook for four players at once.
Brown lands in a real passing offense
Brown joins an offense built around Drake Maye, who finished last season second among all quarterbacks in fantasy points per game. ESPN and NBC Sports both frame Brown as a low end WR1 in New England, landing at the end of round two or start of round three on early post trade boards. ESPN projects him for roughly 130 targets, 86 receptions, 1,216 yards and 7 touchdowns.
Maye gets the alpha receiver he never had
Maye led the league in a pair of key efficiency marks last season and finished as a top two fantasy quarterback without a true number one target. NBC Sports and CBS Sports both flag Maye as a riser off this trade, with some boards moving him into the QB3 range.
Smith inherits the Eagles' passing game
DeVonta Smith becomes the unquestioned WR1 in Philadelphia. CBS Sports and NBC Sports note that in stretches last season when Brown missed time, Smith's target share and air yards share both jumped meaningfully. Extrapolated across a full season as lead receiver, Smith has a real path to a fringe WR1 finish. Dallas Goedert is a quieter beneficiary, profiling as a value add tight end with one fewer read competing for looks.
The loser: Romeo Doubs
Brown's arrival pushes Romeo Doubs down New England's depth chart and out of a featured role. Drafters holding Doubs should treat him as a streaming option at best.
The bottom line
Brown gets a better quarterback and a true number one role. Maye gets the receiver his profile was missing. Smith gets a promotion he has arguably earned. Goedert gets a cleaner path to targets. Doubs takes the hit. Redraft ADP will keep moving on all four names, so check updated boards close to your draft date rather than locking in July rankings.
