A one year runway, not a lost season

The Cowboys signaled before the April draft that they did not plan to negotiate a long term deal with Pickens this year, so the deadline passing is not a surprise. What it does is settle his 2026 role: Dallas is paying him top of market money for one season, with no long term security attached and no reason to manage his workload down.
